(hand knocks on door) – [Interviewer] Hey Charlie, you in there? (guitar music) – Hey there. (bell dings) You guys are here to see the
gym and fridge, aren’t ya? Come right in. Check it out. – [Interviewer] We’re here
to check out your work out, and afterward we’ll head into the kitchen. ♪ You just want attention ♪ ♪ You don’t want my heart ♪ ♪ Maybe you just hate the thought of– ♪ – [Interviewer] So how
often do you work out? – I work out five times a week, and it’s really
challenging, but I love it. – [Interviewer] Do you ever
work out with anyone else? – Sometimes I’ll work out
with my friend Benny Blanco, who I love making music with. But other than that, it’s just– It’s just usually me and Harley. Here he is! (Harley chuckles) With the basketball. – Let’s start off, warm up. Center court, let’s go. – Now, we’re gonna do this in one shot, I’m gonna get this in, like that. – [Harley] In! (claps) – [Charlie] Yeah. – [Interviewer] So when do you work out? – [Charlie] About an hour, sometimes we go over and get the abs, but it’s usually right at 9 a.m. – [Interviewer] What’s an
intense workout for you? – [Charlie] An intense workout, we get all the muscle groups, we get everything goin’. Strong. The more lunges you do, the more you get the little, what? V taper thing action going on. (bell dings) – [Interviewer] So what’s your
soundtrack for working out? (Harley laughs) – Well it’s a lot of R&B. It’s a lot of music you’d never expect to be playing in a gym. We listen to New Edition, we listen to Bobby Brown, we listen to– Just the other day I was doing deadlifts, ♪ On the wings of love ♪ was playing. ♪ On the wings of love ♪ – [Interviewer] What
are your fitness goals? – My fitness goals are just to, not to become too bulky, but to find that perfect happy medium of
just being cut and in shape, but, I don’t wanna look like Arnold, but, like, maybe like 30% Arnold. I found that when I started working out, music got better, my music-making process got better, because I think
my mind is less clouded. The moment I started eating healthier, not eating chicken fingers every day, I started coming up with ideas quicker. So I always come to the gym in the morning and go right to the studio, right after. It’s definitely helped
my confidence on stage. My first show last year
was in Canada, in Toronto. Fifteen thousand people,
just out of pure joy to be back on tour and
playing music again. I was like, “You know what? “This shirt’s full of sweat,
might as well take it off” and everybody went crazy. (crowd cheers)
(girl shrieks) Just, I don’t know, it just made me feel
really good about myself. I know that’s kinda cheesy,
but it makes me feel good. – [Interviewer] What’s your
workout look like on the road? – When I’m working out on tour, my resources are pretty limited and I’m basically, like,
doing workouts in my tour bus. Harley will just email me what I can do, basically without any weights, but just still getting,
like, the same crazy pump that I get on in this gym. – [Interviewer] So if you could
take one thing from this gym on tour, what would it be? – Honestly, I love a treadmill. – [Harley] Huh. – I’d love a good treadmill. I love just zoning out,
going on that treadmill and just– – Kinda, it’s meditation for you. – It is meditation. It’s like driving. – [Interviewer] Do you have any tattoos? – Do I have any tattoos? My mom would kill me if I got a tattoo. I think you’d be pretty disappointed. – I would kill you if you got a tattoo. – (laughs) No tattoos for me. – [Interviewer] What about scars? – I do have a scar. On this eyebrow here, I’m trying to point to my eyebrow – [Harley] Here, I got it. – with when I point to it.
♪ She’s got it goin’ on ♪ I got bit by a dog when I was 2 years old, and I like it now. It’s something I’ve been
living with for all my life. – [Interviewer] How is being
fit informing your music? – In my new fitness lifestyle
inspired a lot of new stuff, musically, especially
on this upcoming album. ♪ If your mother knew all
of the things that we do ♪ ♪ If your mother knew
all the things we do ♪ And what we do in the gym, it’s minimal but maximum results. That’s kind of how I take
it in the studio now, kind of produce things
out minimalistically and put my vocals on
top of it and make sure that they’re to the maximum, and it’s just a different style of music. I’ve never really
created like this before. So that pretty much
concludes the work out. Nice and simple. Gonna go home now and get
changed and head to the studio, and I know you guys
wanna see my fridge, too. So come with me. (upbeat music) – [Interviewer] Oh this is
cool, where are we right now? – So this is my place of work, a.k.a. my studio. Come take a look with me. – [Interviewer] Tell us about this place. – [Charlie] I chose this studio because I’ve come here many times, I’ve made a lot of records with Katy Perry and a lot of other artists here. I decided to splurge out and get Studio A, and this is where they actually recorded all the vocals to “We Are the World,” so this room has a very,
very special essence to it. ♪ We are the world ♪ ♪ We are the children ♪ Very, very special vibration, candles lit everywhere. I’m here until, like, 6 o’clock
in the morning sometimes. – [Interviewer] What’s the deal with that keyboard behind you? – That’s my Rhodes 88. It’s a fantastic keyboard. Well, Rhodes. It’s fully restored. It has a very nice, warm tone to it. (piano music) This, uh, a lot of records, like– (Charlie plays “Summer Madness”) “Summer Madness” by Kool and the Gang. (“Summer Madness” plays) – [Interviewer] How much
time do you spend here? – I usually arrive at around noon, 1 p.m., and some days I’m here until 6 a.m. It’s pretty wild. But I try and cut it off at midnight. – [Interviewer] So you mainly
eat here at the studio? – I do eat most of my meals here. Actually, upstairs there’s a tiny kitchen. – [Interviewer] Where is it? – I can show it to you. (singer vocalizes) – So here, we have my
pretty underwhelming fridge, which houses all of my essentials. I usually get up at 7
and really wake up at 8, have some coffee, and
then make this shake. This is basically my breakfast. It’s almond milk, almonds, apples, bananas, yogurt and
cinnamon, all mixed up. – [Interviewer] Do you drink anything to keep your voice healthy? – I have to drink a
lot of Throat Coat tea. It has a little bit of licorice in it, and it soothes my throat
from singing a lot, so it just ensures that
my throat is in good shape all the time. My diet’s definitely
improved from a year ago. I was eating, I was kind of,
like, half eating healthy. I would eat healthy in the morning and then, like, pig out on fish filet. But now, they actually taste better when you don’t eat them all the time. – [Interviewer] Any food we’d
never see in your fridge? – I really don’t like eggs. I can’t eat pork, I’m
allergic to it completely. That’s really it. I really, really just– I like everything. – [Interviewer] What do you eat most days? – For lunch, a simple
lunch for me would be grilled salmon, maybe some
thyme and lemon on top of it, sweet potato and some broccoli. Dinner, sashimi. I’m pretty boring when it comes to food, but I make sure that I have
some avocado and some cucumber. – [Interviewer] What’s a
cheat day look like for you? – See, when I want my cheat meal, I have things that I used to eat as a kid. So those little miniature
Pizza Hut pizzas, I just, mmmm. If I could eat those every day
and they’d be healthy for me, I sure would eat them every day. – [Interviewer] What do
you grab from the fridge if you’re working through the night? – If I’m– usually hungry at 2 a.m.
and I’m workin’ late, I’ll grab one of these things. These are delicious. Plant protein drinks. – [Interviewer] What’s your favorite food? – My favorite food in
the whole world? (sighs) Sea Bright Pizza in
Sea Bright, New Jersey! Shout out to Cono, it’s the best pizza ever. Well guys, that’s pretty much everything in my miniature kitchen here. Do you have any more questions? If not, I think we should
go back down to the studio. (funky music) – [Interviewer] Whoa, Charlie, you’ve got a ton of keyboards. – There are a lot of special
keyboards in this room. This one in particular, the Korg M1, is used in, like, every Madonna record. (keyboard music) That’s like, the greatest kinda cheesy but, like, gratifying sounds. And over here, is the Korg Triton, which was cutting-edge
technology at the time, it had a CD burner in it. Song today. (drum beats play) Ugh. ♪ Yo, yo, I go by the name ♪ ♪ I’m your pusha ♪ ♪ Of Pharrell ♪ (piano music) And this is good. This is from, like, 1982, but when you add old keyboards that, like, had human imperfections and warmth into such digital-sounding records.
