Collaborate welfare fraud investigation

D — 11 PEOPLE IN CLINTON COUNTY, NEW YORK WERE ARRESTED LAST WEEK FOR CHARGES RELATING TO WELFARE FRAUD. ALL TOGETHER, THE GROUP IS CHARGED WITH DEFRAUDING COST LOCAL GOVERMENTS $170,000. WPTZ’S ALISON CAREY SPOKE WITH SOME OF THE PEOPLE LEADING THE INVESTIGATIONS INTO SUCH OFFENSES. SHE JOINS US WITH CONTINUING COVERAGE LIVE FROM THE STUDIO. ALISON? THE COMMISSIONER FOR CLINTON COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES SAYS ABOUT 25% OF PEOPLE IN THE COUNTY RECEIVED SOME SORT OF PUBLIC ASSISTANCE. THE COMMISSIONER MAINTAINS THAT FRAUD IS THE EXCEPTION AND HIS DEPARTMENT AND ENFORCEMENT ENTITIES TAKE THESE ABUSES SERIOUSLY. WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF CASES WHERE A COUPLE WITH A CHILD WOULD MOVE IN TOGETHER BUT THEY DO NOT REPORT THEIR INCOME THAT THEY ARE LIVING TOGETHER SO THAT WOULD BE A BASIS FOR A FRAUD INVESTIGATION. THE COMMISSIONER FOR THE CLINTON COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES SAYS THERE ARE A NUMBER OF WAYS THE BOOK AND ABUSE PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS AND THE COUNTY HAS POLICIES IN PLACE TO PREVENT FRAUD. THE CLINTON COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE AS AN ANONYMOUS TIP LINE TO HELP UNCOVER POSSIBLE FRAUD. WE GET ABOUT 250 COMPLAINTS PER MONTH. WE INVESTIGATE ALL OF THEM. MOST OF THEM ARE UNFOUNDED. HOWEVER, WE DO HAVE THOSE CASES THAT DO COME TO THE SERVICE — SURFACE. MOST PEOPLE WHO RECEIVE PUBLIC ASSISTANCE DO NOT ABUSE THE SYSTEM. I THINK IT DOES SEND A MESSAGE THAT IF YOU CHEATED THE SYSTEM, EVENTUALLY YOU WILL GET CAUGHT. HOPEFULLY, IT IS NOT THERE ANYONE THAT IS ELIGIBLE OR IN NEED OF SERVICES DO NOT COMMENCE. THIS INSTANCE FOLLOWING PREVIOUS BROUGHT UP THERE —
