Food Today | Animal Welfare

(upbeat music) – Taking care of our animals
is of upmost importance to us in the ranching business. We want to make sure that
these animals do have the best care, and that’s
in our best interest, as well as that for our customers. My name is Donnell Brown. I’m
a fifth generation rancher from Throckmorton, Texas
in the north-central part of the Rolling Plains. My wife, Kelly, and I
and our two boys raise registered Angus, Red
Angus, and SimAngus cattle. We welcome people to the
ranch to see what we do, and we strive to be transparent. We have some ounce of
prevention for a pound of cure where we’ll do vaccinations. We’ll restrain these calves to
give them proper vaccinations in the right location to
enhance their immunity, to enhance their health and well-being. You know and it’s a little
bit like taking our children to the doctor and getting them shots. Can’t say it’s the
favorite thing for our kids when we do that, but we
know, as responsible parents, it’s for their best interest. If animals are sick, then
we obviously want to treat those cattle with the proper medication to get them well as quickly as possible. A healthy animal is a happy
animal, and that’s what we want here at R.A. Brown Ranch. That’s what we want in
the ranching business. One thing about it: Cowboys work hard. Cowboys work long hours
in all kinds of weather, and that’s whether it’s
110 degrees and we need to make sure they have
plenty of fresh water and plenty of shade. If the ground is covered
with snow, we got to provide them some hay or something to eat because their food supply is covered up. If it’s frozen, the water’s
frozen, we got to go out and chop ice to make sure
they have something to drink. But we do it because we
love it. We love what we do, and there’s a passion
about being a steward and caring for another living being and making sure that
we’re taking care of them to the best of our ability. And when we do that, we see that as what’s best for everybody.
