Il Pensiero Economico in Caritas in Veritate con Gianmaria Martini 37. Welfare e sussidiarietà

The economical thought at Caritas in veritate with Gianmaria Martini WELFARE AND SOLIDARITY The model, with which we have been living in this years and which has also constituted the basis of the relations inside the society, between the people, was a model with which, from a certain point of view, we delegated to the state, we delegated to a central model the solution of certain problems which, let’s say, the private society was not capable of solving. From this point of view the system of welfare state has been one of the pillars of the western societies. But this system has brought, exactly because there is a conception of the man today, inside the society, particularly, which does not valorise it’s proper desire, it’s proper desire of happiness, of justice, which does not valorise the try which every man has to be able to solve, to be able to respond to the justice, to the possibilities to grow, to the possibility to respond to the needs which he has, exactly because this try of every man does not get valorised, has brought to a conception tendentially institutional. That’s why, while during the past centuries the idea of personal responsibility was very common, so in front of a problem we needed to personally roll up our sleeves, inside the family, inside the relations between families, to be able to respond to the problems, it could be a natural disaster, it could be the lost of the livestock, it could be any example which we may think about, today we are naturally brought to think that, if we loose the work, the State must resolve this problem, if there is a negative event, the State must solve the needs which are related. It’s a welfarist mentality. In the encyclical Caritas in veritate it’s strongly underlined how we shouldn’t delegate to the State but how the State becomes one of the subjects which has the possibility to answer, but which has to be assisted by the civil society and also by the companies. This is the idea, typically of the principle of subsidiarity of the social doctrine of the Church which underlines how there is a co-responsibility between actors inside the society, which have to be together, capable of responding to every needs. It’s different, because this valorised the responsibility of everyone and so, answering to the need the first bell which have to ring is the one to give to the people the instruments to restart, to play their own responsibility. Not resolving, then, the problem from above, but giving him an tool to search alone, maybe together with other, to solve the problem.
