THE SUGGESTION OF A WEBSITE THAT LISTS NAME AND ADDRESSES IS GENERATING DISCUSSION. WE TALKED WITH PEOPLE IN DOWNTOWN LEWISTON THIS AFTERNOON. NOT A SINGLE ONE ON OR OFF CAMERA VOICED SUPPORT FOR THE IDEA TO PUBLICIZE PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT WELFARE RECIPIENTS. ABSOLUTELY NOT. THAT IS EXPLOITATION OF PEOPLE THAT ARE ALREADY DOWN ON THEIR LUCK. PUTTING THEM IN THE PUBLIC EYE DEGRADES THEM, TAKES AWAY FROM THEIR PRIVACY. PAUL: THE MAYOR USED HIS WEEKLY COLUMN TO SUGGEST THE CREATION OF A WEBSITE LISTING PEOPLE RECEIVING PUBLIC ASSISTANCE AND THE AMOUNT OF TIME THEY HAVE BEEN ON THE WELFARE ROLES. IT WILL DISCOURAGE PEOPLE FROM COMMITTING FRAUD. PAUL: MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SAY IT IS PUBLIC SHAMING. IT IS TAXPAYER MONEY. THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT TRANSPARENCY, AND THIS IS TRANSPARENCY. PAUL: MAC DONALD SO THEY ARE CREATING A WELFARE BURDEN HOLDING LEWISTON BACK. THESE PEOPLE JUST KEEP COMING IN. PAUL: WE SPOKE WITH RESIDENTS WHO RECEIVE FOOD STAMP BENEFITS. THEY SAY THE CREATION OF A DATABASE WOULD BE AN INVASION OF PRIVACY. UNFORTUNATELY, WITH THE ECONOMY, IT IS HARD TO GET OFF THE PROGRAM. YOUR MONEY IS GOING TO RENT. THE LITTLE BIT WE GET IS WHAT KEEPS US ALIVE. PAUL: JAMES WORRIES THAT MAKING PERSONAL INFORMATION PUBLIC WOULD INSPIRE VIGILANTES.
