– Dr. Judy, can you give us some insight into a welfare check? – A welfare check happens when
you have reason to believe that a person is a danger to themselves, to others or that
they’re gravely disabled, meaning they can’t take care of themselves and their daily functioning. At the point of us talking
to Luke on the phone, we were very worried and concerned about his personal safety. So, once the police arrive, it’s usually a team that is well versed in this type of thing. They will able to assess
whether or not he needs to get an evaluation. And the police have
determined in this case that he needed a psychiatric evaluation and basically a mandatory
hold of usually three days to make sure that the hospital can do what they need in that time to hopefully diagnose the problem and give him some resources
and some treatment so that he can be stabilized before he leaves the hospital.
